Choosing curtainsis not just about functionality, but also about making a statement and enhancing the overall ambience of your home. It's an opportunity to add a personal touch that reflects your style and taste.

However, with so many options available, it's easy to feel overwhelmed and unsure of where to start. But fret not - with a few simple steps, you can turn your home into a stylish space with the perfect curtains.

Figuring Out the Right Length

If you plan to hang curtains in your room, it's important to consider the height at which you'd like them to start.

  • measure the distance from the curtain rail to the floor or the windowsill
  • in case of curtains to the windowsill we subtract a few cm if they should end above the windowsill or add 15 cm if they should end below the windowsill line
  • in the case of floor curtains, it is acceptable to leave 1-2 cm of space between the fabric and the floor to achieve a “kiss the floor” effect
  • the optimum margin for soft laying of the curtains on the floor is 5-8 cm
  • the margin between 15 and 25 cm depends on the type of fabric the curtain is made of.

Off-the-shelf vs. Custom

You often just want to get window coverings that “work” without thinking too much about it. Off-the-shelf window treatments are popular because they're easy to find, affordable, and come in standard sizes. However, getting the ideal fit is a different matter altogether, and you may end up with window coverings that are too big or too small.

On the other hand, custom window treatments offer a tailored look unique to your home. You can choose from a wide variety of fabrics, colours, and styles, and they're made specifically to fit your windows. This means you won't have any unsightly gaps or bunching, and your wave or eyelet curtains will function precisely as you need them to.

Fabrics and Colours

Selecting the right fabric is crucial because it can affect their appearance and durability over time. Ideally, you want to choose a material that's not too heavy or light for your wave curtains, which can affect how they fold and fall. It's also important to consider how fabrics will fade over time in the sun, so it's best to avoid bright colours in rooms that get a lot of light.

If you like changing your décor often, we suggest using neutral colours less likely to fade than other colours. Linen, faux silk, and velvet are excellent materials for window treatments since they hang well. Faux silk is particularly durable and doesn't deteriorate as quickly as real silk in sunny rooms.

If you want to keep out the cold, choose materials like suede, velvet, tapestry, or tweed, which are heavier and block light. Interlining with a thick, insulating felt material can also help prolong their useful life.

Curtains for Different Rooms

Choosing curtains for different rooms in your home can be an exciting opportunity to add style and personality to your space. Each room has unique needs and considerations, so it's important to choose curtains that are aesthetically pleasing and functional.

Consider heavier fabrics that can block out light and provide privacy for bedrooms. Look for fabrics like velvet or lined options that can keep the room cool in the summer and warm in the winter.

In living areas, you might opt for pencil pleat curtains with lighter fabrics that allow natural light to filter in, creating a cosy and welcoming atmosphere. Sheer options are excellent for living rooms, as they offer privacy without blocking out natural light.

For kitchens, choose materials that are easy to clean and maintain, such as cotton or polyester. Shorter lengths or valances can also be a practical choice in kitchen spaces, allowing for better ventilation and easier access to windows.

Care Routine

Some fabrics may require special care, such as dry cleaning or hand washing, while others can be machine washed and dried. Knowing how to care for your curtains can help you avoid damaging them or shortening their lifespan.

At Shade in Style, all the curtains we offer require dry cleaning - please note this when preparing for cleaning.
