Choosing curtainsis not just about functionality, but also about making a statement and enhancing the overall ambience of your home. It's an opportunity to add a personal touch that reflects your style and taste.
However, with so many options available, it's easy to feel overwhelmed and unsure of where to start. But fret not - with a few simple steps, you can turn your home into a stylish space with the perfect curtains.
Figuring Out the Right Length
If you plan to hang curtains in your room, it's important to consider the height at which you'd like them to start.
- measure the distance from the curtain rail to the floor or the windowsill
- in case of curtains to the windowsill we subtract a few cm if they should end above the windowsill or add 15 cm if they should end below the windowsill line
- in the case of floor curtains, it is acceptable to leave 1-2 cm of space between the fabric and the floor to achieve a “kiss the floor” effect
- the optimum margin for soft laying of the curtains on the floor is 5-8 cm
- the margin between 15 and 25 cm depends on the type of fabric the curtain is made of.
Off-the-shelf vs. Custom
You often just want to get window coverings that “work” without thinking too much about it. Off-the-shelf window treatments are popular because they're easy to find, affordable, and come in standard sizes. However, getting the ideal fit is a different matter altogether, and you may end up with window coverings that are too big or too small.
On the other hand, custom window treatments offer a tailored look unique to your home. You can choose from a wide variety of fabrics, colours, and styles, and they're made specifically to fit your windows. This means you won't have any unsightly gaps or bunching, and your wave or eyelet curtains will function precisely as you need them to.
